Original LBS Home

This photographic postcard shows the home of the Ladies Benevolent Society, also known as the ”Old Ladies Home,” located at the corner of Main and Huron St. The Society, the oldest philanthropic organization in the City and also in the State of Wisconsin, was organized at the outbreak of the Civil War. The original home was located at the former residence of Joel Mead at the corner of High and Wisconsin St., later sold to the Twentieth Century Club. Additional property sales and a donation of $10,000 from the Sawyer family provided funding for the purchase of this lot and construction of this building in 1901. The building is now home to Centennial Inn, an assisted living and Alzheimer’s care facility.
